추수감사절, 창조절 여섯번째 주일 / 10월 둘째 주일

추수감사절, 10명의 치료와 1명의 감사

화창하고 따뜻한 10월 둘째 주일, 풍성한 음식과 오곡백과와 함께 추수감사의 예배를 드립니다. 조용하고 평화로운 캐나다의 추수감사절입니다. 헬렌 켈러는 2살 되었을 때 시력과 청력과 말하는 것을 잃어버렸습니다. 하지만 그녀는 모든 역경을 극복하고 20세기를 대표하는 교육가, 인도주의자가 되었습니다. 그녀가 쓴 [3일간 볼 수 있다면]이라는 책에 보면 이런 내용이 나옵니다. “내가 만일 3일만 볼 수 있다면 나는 맨 먼저 나에게 따뜻하고 친절하게 대했던 사람들의 얼굴을 볼 것이다. 나를 가르치고 깨우쳐 주신 설리반 선생님을 찾아가서 내가 손끝으로 만져 보았던 그 인자하고 아름다운 얼굴을 몇 시간만이라도 바라보면서 그 모습을 내 마음속에 새겨 두고 싶다. 둘째 날에는 이른 새벽에 일어나 어둠이 물러가고 해가 뜨는 놀라운 광경을 볼 것이다. 하늘에 떠오른 해가 잠자는 지구를 깨우는 그 놀라운 신비를 구경할 것이다. 마지막 셋째 날에는 이른 아침 큰길가에 나아가 출근하는 사람들의 표정을 보며 그들의 바쁜 삶을 이해하려고 노력할 것이다. 그들이 미소 지을 때 나도 미소 짓고, 그들이 무엇인가를 결정할 때 나도 동참하고 그들이 고통받을 때 나는 그들과 아픔을 함께 할 것이다. 삼일이 지나고 다시 눈을 감아야 하는 마지막 시간이 되면 사흘 동안이라도 눈을 떠 볼 수 있게 해주신 하나님께 감사기도 드리고 또다시 깜깜한 암흑세계로 들어가겠다.” 단 삼일만이라도 볼 수 있었으면 좋겠다고 말했지만 헬렌 켈러는 단 한 순간도 세상을 볼 수 없었습니다. 하지만 그녀는 불행하지도 않았고 자신의 운명을 탓하지도 않았습니다. 만나는 사람들을 따뜻하게 대했고 주어진 삶에 감사했습니다. 삶의 모든 순간을 축복으로 여겼고 감사했습니다. 모든 어려움을 뚫고 많은 사람들에게 감동을 주는 교육가가 되었습니다. 그는 누구보다도 감사하는 인생을 살았습니다.
우리는 세상을 살면서 우리가 누리는 많은 부분을 당연하다고 생각합니다. 보고 듣고 말하고 먹고 걸을 수 있다는 것, 아침에 일어나서 혼자서 샤워할 수 있다는 것, 이 모든 것들을 당연하다고 생각합니다. 하지만 이 모든 것들은 당연한 것이 아니라 감사해야 할 것들입니다. 어떤 사람에게는 우리가 당연하다고 생각하는 것들이 평생 한번 해 보았으면 하는 소원일 수도 있습니다. 예수께서 10명의 나병 환자를 고쳐 주셨는데 단 1명이 돌아와서 감사를 고백했습니다. 1명은 사마리아 사람이었습니다. 이 사람은 출신 배경도 좋지 않았고 거기에 더해서 병까지 앓고 있었습니다. 그는 멸시받는 지역에서 태어났습니다. 혼혈로 태어났습니다. 병을 앓았습니다. 자기를 낳아준 부모를 원망하거나 고향을 원망하거나 자기 인생을 원망할 수도 있었습니다. 하지만 원망하지 않았고 오히려 감사를 고백했습니다. 예수께서는 이 사람을 향해 “네 믿음이 너를 구원하였다” 말씀하셨습니다. 치료받은 것이 구원이 될 수 없습니다. 치료받은 것에 더해서 감사가 표현될 때 진정한 구원이 이루어집니다. 10명이 치료받았지만 1명이 감사를 고백했습니다. 10명이 성공하면 1명만 그 성공을 이웃과 나눕니다. 10명이 돈을 벌면 1명만 이웃과 물질을 나눕니다. 한국 기업들이 돈을 많이 벌어도 동포 사회를 위해서 보답하는 기업은 1개 기업이 있을까 말까 합니다. 치료받고 성공하고 출세하고 돈을 많이 벌었다고 해서 그것이 구원이 될 수는 없습니다. 성공이 구원은 아닙니다. 치료와 감사가 만날 때 구원이 이루어집니다. 사마리아 사람은 가장 불행한 사람이었지만 감사를 고백하므로 진정한 구원이 무엇인지를 우리에게 보여주었습니다. 많은 것들을 받았지만 그 받은 것들을 당연하게 여기는 유대인이 아니라 작은 것에도 감사를 고백하는 사마리아 같은 사람, 감사를 고백함으로 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였다 주님께 인정받는 우리들이 되어야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 아멘.
We know the person named Helen Keller. She was ill and struck blind, deaf and mute when she was 2 years old. But she overcame all the adversities and became one of the 20th century's leading educators and humanitarians. She once said in her book [Three Days to See], "If I can see the world for just three days, on the first day, I should see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. I want to gaze long upon the face of my dear teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. The next day, the second day of sight, I should arise with the dawn and see the thrilling miracle by which night is transformed into day. I should behold with awe the magnificent panorama of light with which the sun awakens the sleeping earth. On the last day, I will stand at a busy corner, merely looking at people, trying by sight of them to understand something of their lives. I see smiles, and I am happy. I see serious determination, and I am proud. I see suffering, and I am compassionate.” Unfortunately, Helen Keller could not see even one day, even one moment, but she had lived as if she could see everything with thanksgiving and wonder. She did not blame her destiny rather she regarded life as blessing and gift, although she faced many difficulties in her life.
Everyday we take for granted many things, seeing, hearing, talking, eating, walking, getting up in the morning, taking a shower by myself. We think it is natural for us to do these things everyday. But for some people these things would be their wish lists. Today's scripture says when Jesus cleaned ten people who had a disease leprosy, only one person turned back, praising God with a loud voice. "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.’ Ten people were healed, but only one person gave thanks to God. If ten people achieve success, only one person share that success with others. If ten company makes lot of profits, only one company serves community. This person had lots of handicaps, having a disease and having been born in Samaria. But this person did not blame oneself, rather expressed thanks to God. Today's passage shows that healing alone cannot be salvation. Without thanksgiving, healing cannot be completed. When healing and achievement come together with thanksgiving, we are able to have whole salvation. Thanksgiving gives us salvation. Thanksgiving leads us into an abundant and whole life. Amen.
